Formica Limited is pleased to announce the winning and shortlisted entries for its Design a Laminate Competition. Launched to help celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the birth of Formica® Laminate, the competition supports the company's ethos of pushing forward the boundaries of laminate use and design.
Offering a chance to be part of an interior design classic, this open competition took the design world by storm, eliciting 1089 entries. Originally only the overall winner was to be included within the 2004 Formica® product range, however Formica Limited were so impressed by the standard of entries that all 22 shortlisted entries will now be included. Each shortlisted entrant will earn a royalty on any sales of their design. In addition, the overall winner receives a 15" Apple Powerbook and the category winners each collect an Apple iPod MP3 player.
In addition, Formica Limited felt a wider selection of designs should benefit from recognition and is launching the Formica Design a Laminate Book 2004 which will showcase around two hundred of the best designs submitted to the competition. These designs will also be available to buy and all designers will receive royalties on sales of these designs.
Judged by Wayne Hemingway of hemingwaydesign, Katy Dunn of Blueprint Magazine and Reneé Hytry, VP Global Design, Formica Corporation, the winning entrants are:
Overall Winner Chris Hill, Surface Designer / Lecturer
Classical Category Winner Nicola Smith, Printed Textile Designer and Christopher Jackson, Product Designer;
Contemporary Category Winner Julie Wright, Graphic Designer;
Organic Category Winner Georges Zigrand, Senior Designer;
Retro Category Winner Stuart Dace, Graphic Designer; and
Urban Category Winner Steven Claydon, Product / Furniture Designer.
Paul Niklas, Commercial Director, Formica Limited comments: "The winning design met all the criteria the judges were seeking; useability as a laminate, the addition of something new and different to the range, and high quality of drawing and execution. Employing contemporary colours and clear graphic expression, the winner has achieved a look that is fresh and one which has a high-impact."
